Our
2011 French Quarter Carriage Parade & Stroll has been cancelled
due to upcoming event commitments that could not be confirmed prior
to required deadlines. This includes the pre-stroll luncheon and
after party.
Although
the membership had a full court in preparation for the 2011 season,
some members declined to renew because of the economy and as we
all know, everyone's discretionary income is not what it used to
be.
After
careful consideration, The Board of Directors and myself felt that
the planned events could not be supported fully by the existing
membership and friends of the club. As the leadership of the club
is responsible for the monies paid on behalf of all members, it
became clear and imperative that we must in good faith refund all
membership monies instead of taking the risk of moving forward and
possibly not being able to keep our commitments as planned.
While
the 2011 French Quarter Carriage Parade & Stroll has been cancelled,
the philanthropic efforts of the krewe will not end!
From
this day forward, the Mystic Krewe of Shangri-La will continue as
the
"Mystic
Krewe of Shangri-La Social Club".
The
mission of the club will continue its foremost effort in providing
necessary fundraiser's for worthy charities. One such organization
to benefit from the ongoing efforts of Shangri-La is the school
known as Kipp
McDonogh #15. Kipp McDonogh is very close to my heart since
this is the charter school in the French Quarter with many children
from Central City.
The old saying of "The Children Are Our Future", is not
only true, but a worthy effort to continue to support. I invite
you to also support this effort with Shangri-La, as we will continue
to have Dinner Gatherings and Parties in support of such organizations.
Thanks
so much to all the friends of Shangri-La who have supported our
efforts over the years.
We may have to change our direction somewhat, but our mission will
remain the same.

Queen XXXVI Cindi Mistrot appeared in a walk-on part
during the performance of Wicked
at the Mahalia Jackson Theater on April 10, 2010. Her appearance was
the result of a successful bid by husband Ron during an auction at
the Le Petit Theatre du Vieux Carre benefiting the NO/AIDS
Task Force. |
Cindi
says, “The entire cast was so wonderful to me - I even had
my own dressing table with mirror and lights with all of the dancers
and singers and on my dressing table when I got there they had a
poster signed by the entire cast! When
the play was over, Good Witch Glinda (Chandra Lee Schwartz)
and Elphaba, the Wicked Witch
of the West (Donna Vivino), hugged me and said let’s
take a picture. This was truly an experience of a lifetime and way
up there with being the Queen of Shangri-La!” |

Noted artist and New Orleans native Manuel Ponce has just published
his new website featuring his beautiful artwork for the
Krewes of Bacchus, Endymion, Orpheus, Rex and of course Shangri-La!
Manuel designed the 35th Anniversary poster for Shangri-La and it
is shown on his Limited
Edition Prints page. The Shangri-La artwork is also featured
in the opening animation on his home page.
This print is limited in quantity and can only
be obtained through the

On March
6, 2010 at the Shangir-La Board of Directors meeting, Mary Katherine
Lonatro-Tusa (Founder of Shangri-La) presented Barbara Nicosia with
a plaque in appreciation of her dedication and service as President
of the Krewe from 2008-2010.
Mr. William "Bill" L. Cowser,
Jr. will serve as the Krewe's President for the 2010-2011 Mardi
Gras Year. Bill was King XXXIV of Shangri-La in 2007.

Pajama Program Support
An Overwhelming Success!
At its annual Christmas Party on
December 6, 2009, members and friends of The Krewe of Shangri-La
donated gift-wrapped pajamas to support the Louisiana
Chapter of the Pajama Program. Thanks to the number of holiday-wrapped
pajamas donated, it will be a wonderful holiday season for children
at the Battered Women’s Shelter in St. Bernard Parish
and for those at the Odyssey House in Orleans Parish.
The pajamas were collected during Shangri-La’s annual Christmas
party on December 6, 2009. Margie Dotson, the Co-President
of the Louisiana Chapter of the PJ Program wrote, “I
could not believe the amount of pajamas and books we received from
your krewe. What a wonderful group of people. We received so many
pajamas… from your organization we were able to help more
than one organization.... I know the children will be just as excited
to see all of the pajamas and books as we were. Thanks again and
may God bless.” We look forward to our continued
support of this worthwhile non-profit organization during the 2010

Coronation
Jazz Brunch Auction --- a Winner!
The Ballroom of the Astor Crowne-Plaza
was full as members and friends flowed in from the annual Shangri-La
Silent Auction. After presentation of the 2010 Royal Court
and Grand Marshal, the Auction Chairperson, Brenda
Reilly, presided over the closing of auction boards and
presentation of the Live Auction. The Live Auctioneers were Angela
Hill and Maryflynn Thomas. The Live and Silent Auctions
resulted in a donation of over $1,000 to the Kipp McDonogh
#15 School in the French Quarter.
Of course, the main attraction of
the day was presentation of the Royal Court. Queen
XXXVII is Charlotte Matthew. Her Imperial Court
includes Elizabeth Behrens, Deborah Grumblatt, Billlie Ann Lopez,
Katherine Caroline Matthew-Parker, Patricia Stanley, and Angela
Henry-Winklow. The 2010 Grand Marshal is Sammy L. Steele
with Angela Hill being the Grand Marshal Emeritus.
The revered Shangri-La Phoenix is Rebecca Wartelle.
