2007 POLICE APPRECIATION PROGRAM

"ADOPT A COP"

Carnival would not happen if it were not for the hard work of our New Orleans Police Department every year. The Krewe of Shangri-La has always shown their appreciation for the tireless coordination, cooperation and generally good natured attitude of our Men and Women in Blue every year. In years past, the Captain and officers of Shangri-La have hosted a luncheon during the Mardi Gras season where small gifts were given to the Chief and to our most esteemed Sergeant Valiente and until not too long ago, Sergeant Mac.

In 2007, all members will have a chance to show their affection and appreciation to the NOPD by adopting a cop. We estimate there are 35 police and women in the motorcycle division who would benefit from this program. If we get more than 35 volunteers to adopt, we can add more police to the program.

The Krewe will supply you with a Chinese take out box which you will fill with useful items our officers can use while on the street working the parades.

These take out boxes were given out at the Holiday Brunch on December 10th. They will be collected throughout the month of January at all Shangri-La events:

1. January 3 Officers, Lieutenants, Committee Heads and Ambassadors meeting at the Hilton Garden Inn Hotel

2. Bead Pick up January 13 at Jefferson Variety

3. Call Michelle Minyard 504-430-8172 if you miss or forget and she will arrange to have your items picked up.

We will present them to representatives from NOPD at a date to be determined.

Several people may adopt a cop such as a float may adopt 4 cops, or families, friends, the Royal Maids, Dukes and the court may adopt as a group or individually. We want as many people involved as possible and to adopt as many cops as we can. How many times has an officer picked up a pair of beads for you?

At the brunch, some out of town members gave money and we will fill the boxes for them. If this works for you, please give Michelle a call.

There will only be the St. Charles route on the East Bank so any restaurants you know of with a location on or around St. Charles would be good to ask for a voucher for coffee or a sandwich.

Useful items in the box would be:
Chapstick
Warm socks
Gloves
Coupon for Dunkin Donuts or a coffee shop on St. Charles Ave.
Mints
Tissues
Sunglasses
Hand cream

Shangri-La Sexy Lady bead------
Remember police may not alter their uniforms in any way like wearing beads, however, they can always give them to their families.
Not all cops are men, remember there are ladies so if you get things for girls, please mark the box.

Michelle Minyard will organize the program. Please email Michelle at
michelleminyard@hotmail.com for questions or more boxes.

Please put a little note in the boxes so the officers will know who the people are that thought of them and appreciates their hard work.

This will also be posted on the web site. If you find a great thing to put in the box, please let me know and we can pass the word around.

Thank you very much. Get your float involved. Lieutenants, we are counting on you to email your riders no matter where they live, this is a fun activity for your float, friends, coworkers and family to do together.
